Inclusive Climate and Culture

Our Commitment to an Inclusive Climate

PSD is committed to ensuring that every individual we serve is honored, valued, and supported for who they are. We strive to create and sustain equitable, inclusive, and rigorous educational opportunities, experiences, and outcomes for all students.

We recognize that equity requires intentional action. To ensure that student outcomes are not predictable by identity or demographic factors, we commit to the following:

Speak Up at School
We promote a culture where speaking up against bias, discrimination, and harassment is expected and supported. Students and staff learn practical strategies to interrupt harmful language and actions in safe and meaningful ways. We utilize the Speak Up at School protocol from the Learning for Justice resource.

Upstander Lessons
In 4th and 6th grade, students are equipped with the skills and confidence to stand up for themselves and others. Through intentional lessons, we cultivate empathy, courage, and responsibility in the face of bias or harm. This work is aligned with the district’s strategic plan, specifically supporting goals related to mental health and belonging.

Board of Education Resolutions
Our commitments are grounded in Board-adopted resolutions that affirm equity, inclusion, and the dignity of all students. These resolutions guide our policies, priorities, and accountability ensuring that all voices in our district are heard.

Equity-Centered Norms of Collaboration
We engage in continuous learning and dialogue using shared norms that center equity, promote self-reflection, and encourage growth. These norms guide how we work together as educators and leaders in meeting spaces and when making decisions.

Title VI Native American Education Program

We honor and support American Indian and Alaska Native students through culturally relevant programming, community partnerships, and academic support.

PSD’s Multicultural Calendar

This calendar is ever-evolving, and we recognize it may not yet reflect all identities and experiences. If you notice a holiday or observance that represents you or your culture is missing, we invite you to email the Coordinator of Language, Culture, and Equity (jaltomare@psdschools.org) so we can continue to grow and improve together.

Professional Learning & Culturally Responsive Practices

We provide ongoing, high-quality professional learning to ensure all staff implement culturally responsive pedagogy, curriculum, and assessment practices that meet the diverse needs of students. A recurring book study offered to staff is based on Zaretta Hammond’s book entitled, Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain.
