Eighth grader Haley Kendall didn’t hesitate as she confidently spelled the championship word into the microphone.
“Tertiary,” she said quickly. “T-e-r-t-i-a-r-y. Tertiary.”
And with that, the Ridgeview Classical Schools student became winner of the 2019 Poudre School District Spelling Bee after 36 hard-fought rounds. This is the second time Haley has won the spelling bee. As a sixth grader, she captured the district title in 2017.
“It’s exciting,” Haley said right after her victory. “The hardest word I had to spell was probably ‘narcissistic.’”
To earn a spot in the district competition, students had to win their school spelling bee and take a written test. Ten other top finishers will also move on to the state competition next month in Denver. Those students include:
• Manar Buhalfaya, Blevins
• Seleen Burgos, Lopez
• Sophia Dellota, Kinard
• Rowan Flaitz, Liberty Common
• Theo Gregory, Laurel
• Rohan Jamtgaard, Cache La Poudre Middle School
• Anubhav Joshi, O’Dea
• Lily Petrecca, Webber
• Diyanshi Premkumar, Traut
• Cedric Sony, Werner
