Interviews and Community Forums for Director Applicants on Feb. 21

The Poudre School District Board of Education will interview and hold community forums for candidates for the vacant director seats on Thursday, Feb. 21, at the Johannsen Support Services Center (JSSC), 2407 LaPorte Ave. The public is invited to talk with the applicants during the community forums and observe the Board interviews, beginning at 5:30 p.m. that evening.

Two candidates have applied to fill the District A seat and five have applied to fill the District G seat. Both positions were vacated in January.

Cathy Kipp, who served District A, resigned after being elected to fill the vacancy left by State Sen. Joann Ginal to represent House District 52 in the Colorado Legislature.

Susan Gutowsky, who served District G, left after being selected to replace outgoing Council member Bob Overbeck on the Fort Collins City Council.

Applicant interview process on Feb. 21 

Board interviews and community forums will be held at the same time at the JSSC. The Board will interview each applicant individually in the Board room, while community members will have a chance to talk with each applicant in the JSSC lobby area and provide feedback to the Board on comment cards. After interviewing the candidates, the Board will deliberate and make an appointment for each District director seat.

Applications no longer being accepted 

Qualified individuals interested in filling the Director District A and Director District G positions were invited to apply by Feb. 7.

Applicants submitted the following items: 

  • Letter of interest stating why the applicant is interested in serving on the Board of Education, describing any background/experience the applicant has relating to the work of the school board, and explaining what, if any, involvement the applicant has had with schools.

  • A Notarized Candidate Affidavit verifying for the applicant has never been convicted of commission of a sexual offense against a child. The Board will conduct background checks on all finalists.  

  • A Notice of Intent to Apply for Vacancy Form

 

Requirements for applicants

To qualify for the vacant Board seats, applicants must meet all of the following requirements:

•    Be an eligible elector of Poudre School District for 12 consecutive months
•    Be a resident of Poudre School District for 12 consecutive months
•    Be a resident of the Director District they want to represent (A or G)
•    Must not have been convicted of a sexual offense against a child

The Board of Education will verify qualifications through the records of the Larimer County Clerk and Recorder and the applicants' affidavits.

 

    Appointed directors and term completion

    Individuals appointed to fill the District A and District G positions will complete the remainder of the current terms on the Board, serving until the successful candidates for each director position are elected in November 2019. Individuals appointed to serve the duration of the terms have the option to run in the 2019 election.

     

    Process for finalists for open seats

    • Selection of Finalists: Current Board directors will select finalists from the submitted applications.
       
    • Finalist Interviews: Board and community members interviews will be held Thursday, Feb. 21, at the Johannsen Support Services Center, 2407 LaPorte Ave.  
       
    • Director Appointments: After the finalist interviews, the Board will appoint two new members, one representing District A and one representing District G.

     

    Board of Education service and meetings

    PSD Board of Education directors are volunteers who serve on the Board without pay. 

    Regular meetings are generally held on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. The meetings on the second Tuesday of each month usually include a dinner session beginning at 5:30 p.m. followed by a business meeting at 6:30 p.m. The meetings on the fourth Tuesday of each month usually include a 5:30 p.m. dinner session, then a short business meeting beginning at 6:30 p.m., followed by a work session.

    Traditionally, Board meetings are not held in July. Periodically throughout the year, the Board may hold special meetings and retreats outside of the regular meeting schedule. Board members also serve on one or more committees that meet periodically during the year.
