Athletics & Extracurricular Activities FAQ

Sports and clubs are available at most schools. Check with your individual school to see options and openings in these sports and clubs or visit the activities page on the PSD site. 

Students can begin taking part in athletics starting in sixth grade, though only some sports will be open to this youngest group. This includes cross country, golf, tennis, wrestling and track and field. For all other sports at the 6th grade level, programming is offered through Fort Collins Recreation, which can be found at the following link.  

Students can register for activities through their school or online through the PSD athletics website, found at the following link. 

• Middle school students must fill out a registration form as well as a medical physical form to participate in PSD athletics. More information on participating in middle school athletics, as well as necessary forms, can be found at the following link. 
• High school students must complete the following forms to compete in PSD athletics: 
  • Student Athlete Medical Information form
  • CHSAA Eligibility form
  • Authorization for Athletic Participation 
  • Social Media form 
  • PSD Athletic In-State Overnight Blanket Permission form
  • CHSAA Preparticipation Physical Evaluation form

There are some costs that come with participating in athletics or extracurricular programs but the costs depend on the program and grade level. More information for athletic costs can be found on the PSD athletics page found at the following link. Fees may be waived if a family qualifies for financial assistance.

Expectations for academic performance and attendance will depend on the grade and school that a student is enrolled in. Check in with your school and activity you are part of to confirm this information. 

• The health and safety of students when participating in athletics is of the utmost importance to everyone involved. The district and individual athletic programs provide a variety of protocols and equipment to ensure students safety. This includes:
  • Coaches being trained in CPR, the use of AEDs and first aid, and identifying concussions
  • Active heat monitoring
  • A lightning detection system on all coaches’ phones
  • Active air quality monitoring 
  • Athletic trainers for high school students
  • Medical kits for every middle school program 
  • Portable AED units at every school
  • Emergency action plans on file at every school 
  • Medical personnel on site at every football game

Transportation options will depend on the sport or activity, with transportation provided to most competitions. Check with your activity or athletic director for more information on travel for your particular sport or activity.

For middle school athletics and activities and high school activities students can participate right away. However, high school students participating in athletics will need to fill out Colorado High School Activities Association transfer forms online with the support of the receiving school’s athletic director to determine the level of athletic eligibility.

Students looking to start a new club or activity can work with their school’s activity director to complete an online application. All clubs must be approved through the district’s process of starting new activities.
